A workshop on Belt and Road Production Capacity Cooperation between China and Bangladesh has been held. The workshop was held at the Westin Hotel in Dhaka last Sunday (October 23).
Workshop presided over by Chinese Ambassador to China Li Jiming. Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Joint Secretary and Wing Chief of the Economic Relations Division of the Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh, was there as the chief guest. Dr. Zaidi Sattar, Chairman of the Policy Research Institute, made a presentation as an honored special guest.
Trainees who attended ‘Seminar on Belt & Road Production Capacity Cooperation for Bangladesh’ in May 2019 in Beijing, China and representatives of Chinese companies in Bangladesh attended the workshop and join the discussions on Production Capacity cooperation between China and Bangladesh under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
In his welcome remarks and keynote speech, Ambassador Li Jiming pointed out that, Bangladesh is an indispensable partner for China to advance the BRI with and to conduct production capacity cooperation in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region.
He also said, President Xi and Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina witnessed the signing of the MOU on “Investment and Production Capacity Cooperation between China and Bangladesh” in October 2016, and since then “China has provided Bangladesh with concessional loans of around 10 billion USD, which is very rare in the global G-to-G cooperation”.
He believes, “China and Bangladesh can continue to work together to produce win-win outcomes in the future under the BRI”. The Ambassador also emphasized the importance of human resources cooperation between China and Bangladesh.
He said, “The cooperation on human resources development between us, with the support from the Bangladeshi government, would continue in a strengthened manner in the future”.
Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Joint Secretary and Wing Chief of the Economic Relations Division of the Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh, appreciated China for regarding Bangladesh as “an indispensable partner” under the BRI.
He pointed out Bangladesh was among the first countries who joined the BRI in South Asia, and will continue to support the Belt and Road Production Capacity Cooperation between China and Bangladesh.
He also said, Bangladesh has its own advantages, such as its favorable geographic location and huge population. He believes with the support from China under the BRI, the goal of Bangladeshi prosperity could be realized eventually.
The Chairman of Policy Research Institute Dr. Zaidi Sattar said, the achievements China has made these years resulted from China’s strategy of economic development that produced export surge, rapid growth and poverty reduction.
He pointed out that the BRI is an approach to sharing prosperity for the entire community, and Bangladesh could learn some lessons from Chinese development experiences.
Representatives of trainees who attended the Training Programs under the China-aids framework expressed their thanks to China for providing chances for them to learn in China, and they really enjoyed their time in China. They also shared their experiences and put forwards useful proposals for deepening the Production Capacity Cooperation between the two countries.
Representatives of Chinese Companies who participated in G-to-G projects in Bangladesh introduced their projects and shared their observations on production capacity cooperation.
Officials from Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Textiles and Jute, Local Government Division, Ministry of Shipping, Energy and Mineral Resources Division, Dhaka North City Corporation, Power Division, Ministry of Road Transport and Bridge, Sustainable And Renewable Energy Development Authority, PetroBangla, Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority also attended the workshop.
